The happy side of a project…

I’ve spent the last several week dashing across the country for work. It looks like that batch of travel insanity will be worth it, but I returned home tired with oh, so much to  do here from wiring to catching up on the lawn mowing, checking in with friends I haven’t said hello to for well over a month, the next “laundry social” and various calls and measurement verifications for Troy’s continuing work.

Today, is the happier side of the project. Today, I’m feeling more relaxed. One gigantic paperwork hassle concluded the end of last week. I spent part of Saturday with a friend rambling around wine country and completed most of my figure-checking for the moment. I mowed on Sunday. I am still remiss on checking in with a few friends and will tackle laundry again next weekend…at someone’s house.

I’m catching up on the blog. It’s about 7:00pm and I’ve not worried about fixing dinner yet. I don’t have the 220v wiring for the stove done yet so it’s a microwave cookin’ kinda night. Troy is out there at work, happy as a clam. You can tell that building stuff is what makes him happy. I hear some banging sounds, the slide of the tape measure, some hammer tapping, the buzz of a saw and his radio. From time to time he chimes in at the top of his lungs with a line or two of a song. Never the full verse.   “We walked on, to my door…………..Every single day………..”

Last week he brought his son, Roman, along. Great kid! Troy was

Roman came out after his school year ended. I told him to pick a cool tool and show it off…. he chose the circular saw.

taking measurements and dictating them fast and furious for Roman to write down. I suspected the numbers were coming too fast but Troy sensed my thought and beamed with pride as he announced Roman is considered gifted in math so he stretches him to use his memory for numbers, keeping track of incoming numbers while he’s still writing earlier numbers. I thought for a moment how un-gifted I am at numbers. Good thing that wasn’t me with the pencil!

I can see where Roman gets his aptitude for math. The work Troy does requires intense mental math and he pulls it off while listening to the radio, calling to check on orders and cutting boards while balanced atop a 10 foot ladder. A week ago Troy announced that between all the walls he’s out of square by less than 1/8 inch across the back wall. I can see where Roman gets it from.

He’s singing along to Stand By Me now.
Whoever thought a construction site would be a happy place? This evening it’s cool outside  with the sun waning in the sky. There is barely a breeze and it’s a happy place. If the kids next door with their wiggly big brown dog pop out for piggy back rides, it will be a perfect evening.
