Style Considerations

autumn-leavesAs an artist I have been debating this year both on the locations at which I present my art, and the style or substrate of my art.

First for locations, I have had a wonderful time this year doing new things. Instead of a dedicated gallery presence, I have selected a few shows and display opportunities. All of these have been tremendously successful and have introduced my work to audiences who have not visited the ole’ gallery. I have displayed work at winery tasting room events and a couple businesses that host artists. I am considering a new opportunity for the last two months of the year to give my work an art/shopping space before the holidays. I’ll share more on that when I decide!

For style, I have noticed more and more artists printing on aluminum as I have for about 10 years. I was very deliberate about my choice of substrate 10 years ago. It showed off my particular artistic rendering style and flattered lighting, color and texture. “Autumn Leaves” is one such image that simply glows on silver! Sadly, my deliberate choice has become the fad of so many. While a few are using the substrate to enhance their work as I have, far more appear to be simply swept up in a fad. I tire at art shows with booth after booth after booth of photography on aluminum now. My heart aches that a signature process I have used has become so tired and mundane.

And so what do I do? I am not entirely certain yet, but I strive to keep my work alive and drawing people into the moment of each image. Maybe it’s time to examine a new process? I continue to roll this notion over in my mind and welcome your thoughts!
