File the house under “miscellaneous”

It’s Sunday at 2:30pm which means I should not have time right now to write a blog post. The movers were to come at 1:00pm and when they were not here by 1:45 I called and left message. After pacing the driveway for another 20 minutes I returned inside and ranted on Facebook. Then at about 2:20pm I tried calling them again and the owner answered the phone.

The owner looked at his notes and clearly saw he’d taken my call, written down I was to be moved from 1-3pm Sunday afternoon, and then did not transfer the message to the computer system. He was quick to apologize…profusely. Profusely enough I had to interrupt and suggest we be about finding a solution–let’s move on. Now he’s calling his drivers to see who can still take the job this afternoon.

Looking around, I have worked hard to stage all the furniture so it’s ready to go. There’s the area with stuff headed for storage and stuff headed to the house. There’s a third area heading for Goodwill and Habitat ReStore. But once all this is removed, there remains a lot of stuff around the place–mostly papers; stacks of papers. There are papers for my taxes, papers for my photography business, papers with great recipes to try, papers with travel tips for cool destinations, papers with building ideas, work papers and all sorts of other bits of information. Except for a few critical topics with their very own file folders, there are not enough of each class of information to warrant cataloging, so they all go in one box… “miscellaneous.”  Gee, I think I have five or six miscellaneous boxes worth!

The movers just called back… none of their drivers are answering their phones. I bet they’re all snow skiing. They are going to move my furniture and miscellaneous boxes after work tomorrow–they don’t normally do evening appointments, but they realize they screwed up and this needs to happen on my schedule. They’re waiving fuel surcharges. I suppose I could press them for more discount, but so long as they get the work done, that’s what I’m after.

Rats! I could have gone to church this morning if I had known.
