Construction: hurry up and wait

Construction seems to live in a whole other universe with a completely different sense of time. Yes, I’ll admit that I’m just a little nervous.

It seemed to take a really long time to get to the post and beam inspection, and while it’s an important inspection, it doesn’t involve that much. You have your excavated pit with concrete piers poured to support the eventual floor. You have a drain from the bottom of the pit (bottom of what will be the crawl space) to the outside of the foundation, and you have a couple large wood cross beams from pier to pier that further supports the floor. Oh, and you have heavy plastic sheeting across the bottom. That’s it. It would seem to be an afternoon’s work to me but over a week has gone by and two days ago we finally reached the inspection… and it was not passed.

Often when something doesn’t pass, the inspector signs off with “correct and proceed” but in my case it just reads “not approved.” That means Troy has to make a few small corrections and then wait until the next opportunity for a reinspection. Until that happens, no further work happens.

For now, I’m working out my frustrations in the garden. I’ve become so very glad I got those huge dump loads of dirt, mulch and rock when I did. I’m now filling a 6′ x 6′ center garden bed with dirt. In the center will be the bird bath and I’m thinking through how I’ll plant the rest. I may plant this as a flower bed rather than vegetable bed. I’m yet undecided.
