Garden Report

The board to build the final 3ft. x 3ft. raised bed are still there leaning against the house. There are times I just run out of enthusiasm for completing some minute part of a job. With that, I shift focus until the enthusiasm returns.

A happy garden (and a happy gardener!)

The planted gardens are looking great, though. The potatoes have tripled in size, beans are up about six or so inches, lettuce flourishing and Malabar spinach is sprouting now. The peppermint and basil have taken hold well and the rhubarb is quickly growing too. The tomatoes are covered with blossoms and swiss chard is up about an inch. Asparagus is growing light and wispy– this is not a harvest year for that.

Among the fruit trees, the cherry is flourishing as are the two pear trees. The Bartlett is covered with tiny pinky-sized pears. The blueberries are setting fruit too. The red barron peach, however, appears to be one expensive dead stick.

I have planted several herbaceous peonies around the bird bath. None has sprouted yet so the verdict remains out on those.

Today I dropped by a local garden center where vegetable starts were on sale. With that I have added three artichokes, two Italian roasting peppers, one cantaloupe and one miniature pumpkin to the garden.

There’s gonna be some good eating this summer!
