July garden report

Geeze, so many of these posts I need to add photos to!

The garden had been producing lots of green: lettuce greens, Swiss chard and now green beans. The peas were there but not worth noting. There are just enough healthy pods (four maybe?) for seed for next year; or I might decide to grow a different kind of peas. The tomatoes are amazing though not ripe yet. The two plants are completely covered in blossoms and the earliest fruits are about golf-ball size. The parsley is growing albeit slowly in the shade of the tomatoes. The roasting peppers surprised me by producing half a dozen beautiful roasting peppers without me seeing them until the were ripe. Those are covered with more blossoms too. The miniature pumpkin also surprised me. It has two orange mini-pumpkins on it now, well ahead of when expected. The potatoes have thrived and I dug two potatoes last night for dinner. The hot summer days have made the New Zealand spinach take off producing succulent shoots. I had some of that for dinner last night too–delicious! The herbs are doing well too. The basil plants have doubled in size and I have several rooted clippings from them too. The lemon thyme is growing very happily as is the creeping thyme and parsley. The oregano has been spindly but setting some seed now. Asparagus has been growing stronger and stronger. Young shoots coming up are now the size of pencils so next year I should be able to harvest some. The artichokes seem to be growing heartily too and may produce some next year. Finally the cantaloupe is covered with dozens of blossoms and some fruit the size of ping-pong balls. I’m told the frequent problem with cantaloupe is that the melons don’t reach maturity before first frost. So, we’ll see what happens there.

I promise…I’ll get some photos uploaded when I come up for air!
